Temples: Arunachaleswarar Temple – Pancha Bhoota Sthalas – 03/05

🔥Agni Lingam (Fire Element of Shiva)

🕉️ Introduction

The Arunachaleswarar Temple in Tiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu, is the sacred abode of Lord Shiva as the Agni (Fire) Lingam — the third of the Pancha Bhoota Sthalas representing the five great elements. Unlike typical Shiva Lingams, this temple is not just a structure—it is the mountain itself, considered the fiery embodiment of Shiva’s absolute formless presence.

“Arunachala is not a hill. It is a flame standing still.”
– Ancient Tamil saying

🔥 Element: Agni (Fire)

Fire in Sanatana Dharma signifies transformation, light, tapas (austerity), and knowledge. It is the element through which ignorance is burned, karma is purified, and divinity is realized. Here, Shiva manifests as an infinite column of fire that neither Brahma nor Vishnu could measure.

📖 Sacred Legend – Pillar of Fire

Once, Brahma and Vishnu argued over who was superior. To test them, Lord Shiva appeared as an infinite pillar of fire, challenging them to find its beginning and end. Vishnu took the form of a boar and dug downward; Brahma became a swan and flew upward — both failed.

Shiva, the infinite fire of wisdom and presence, humbled them. That fire became Arunachala, the mountain of light and realization.

🗻 The Mountain Itself is the Lingam

Unlike other temples, Arunachala Hill is the deity. The temple at its base is only a gateway. According to saints like Sri Ramana Maharshi, merely thinking of Arunachala is equivalent to darshan of Shiva.

Sacred Insight:

“Arunachala Shiva! Arunachala Shiva!” — Chanting this name alone burns lifetimes of karma.

🛕 Temple Architecture

  • Nine towers (gopurams), the tallest being the East Rajagopuram at 217 ft.
  • Thousand-pillared mandapam for festivals and performances.
  • Aayiram Kaal Mandapam – symbolic of infinite support of Shiva.
  • Massive corridors, tanks, gardens, and shrines covering multiple acres.
  • Four large gopurams mark cardinal directions—symbolizing the all-encompassing Agni.

🔥 Karthigai Deepam – The Grand Festival of Fire

Each year during Karthigai Deepam (November–December):

  • A giant cauldron of ghee and camphor is placed atop Arunachala hill.
  • At twilight, a flame is lit atop the mountain, visible for miles.
  • Symbolizes Shiva as the Light of Lights (Jyotir Lingam).
  • Millions of devotees chant “Annamalaiyarukku Arohara” and witness this divine sight.

Festival Mantra:
ॐ अरुणाचलेश्वराय नमः।
Om Arunachaleshwaraya Namah
Salutations to the Lord of Arunachala.

🧘 Girivalam – Circumambulation of the Hill

One of the most spiritually potent practices is Girivalam (walking 14 km barefoot around the sacred hill), especially on Pournami (Full Moon Nights).

Benefits of Girivalam:

  • Burns karmas from past births
  • Cures chronic diseases
  • Helps attain mental clarity and moksha
  • Every step is said to be equal to performing yajnas

Along the path are eight Ashta Lingams (Earth, Water, Fire, Air, Space, Mind, Ego, and Enlightenment) representing spiritual purification stages.

📿 Daily Rituals and Special Pujas

  • Six daily pujas beginning at 5:30 AM
  • Pradosham observed with great devotion
  • Chandramouliswara Abhishekam – Shiva’s crescent moon form
  • Rudra Homam and Agni Homas held on auspicious days
