Bhagavad Gita Chapter 2, Shloka 70 – Deep Dive
“Like the ocean that remains full though rivers enter it…”
📜 Sanskrit Verse
आपूर्यमाणमचलप्रतिष्ठं
समुद्रमापः प्रविशन्ति यद्वत्।
तद्वत्कामा यं प्रविशन्ति सर्वे
स शान्तिमाप्नोति न कामकामी॥
🔤 Transliteration
āpūryamāṇam acala-pratiṣṭhaṁ
samudram āpaḥ praviśanti yadvat
tadvat kāmā yaṁ praviśanti sarve
sa śāntim āpnoti na kāma-kāmī
🌍 English Translation
As the ocean remains ever full and unmoved,
though countless rivers flow into it,
so too is the person into whom all desires enter
but who remains unaffected — such a one attains peace,
not the one who runs after desires.
🧭 Context in the Gita
This verse appears in Chapter 2 – Sāṅkhya Yoga, where Krishna describes the qualities of a sthita-prajña — a person of steady wisdom. Such a person is deep, undisturbed, and centered.
Here, Krishna offers a majestic metaphor: the ocean — vast, still, accepting, and unshaken.
🔍 Line-by-Line Explanation
🔹 आपूर्यमाणम् अचलप्रतिष्ठम्
“Ever being filled, yet unshaken in foundation…”
The ocean doesn’t swell or shrink when rivers flow into it. Similarly, the wise one remains unchanged by gain, loss, praise, or insult.
🔹 समुद्रम आपः प्रविशन्ति यद्वत्
“As waters enter the ocean…”
Desires, temptations, and situations may come — but the one rooted in wisdom lets them pass, like rivers into the sea.
🔹 तद्वत्कामा यं प्रविशन्ति सर्वे
“So do desires enter him…”
Desires are not forcibly suppressed — they come, but the wise don’t chase or identify with them. There is no clinging.
🔹 स शान्तिम् आप्नोति न कामकामी
“He attains peace, not the one who craves desires.”
Peace belongs to the one who accepts desires without being enslaved. One who runs after fulfillment will never be full.
