🔤 Transliteration
dhyāyato viṣayān puṁsaḥ saṅgas teṣūpajāyate
saṅgāt sañjāyate kāmaḥ kāmāt krodho ’bhijāyate
krodhād bhavati sammohah sammohāt smṛti-vibhramaḥ

🌍 English Translation
While contemplating the objects of the senses, a person develops attachment.
From attachment comes desire, from desire arises anger.
From anger comes delusion, from delusion loss of memory.
From loss of memory, the destruction of intellect — and with that, the person perishes.
🧭 Context in the Gita
This powerful sequence appears when Krishna is teaching Arjuna the psychology of downfall. Arjuna, like most of us, is struggling not just with outer war but with inner temptation and turmoil.
These verses describe the step-by-step degeneration of the mind — from harmless thoughts to total self-destruction — when we cling to desires and don’t govern our inner world.
🔍 Step-by-Step Breakdown
1️⃣ ध्यायतो विषयान् – “Thinking of objects of enjoyment”
The downfall begins with repeated thinking about sense pleasures — wealth, fame, lust, food, success, etc.
2️⃣ सङ्गः – “Attachment is born”
The mind clings to the thought: “I need this to be happy.”
3️⃣ कामः – “Desire arises”
Now the thought becomes intense craving. The mind feels: “I cannot live without this.”
4️⃣ क्रोधः – “Anger arises when desire is blocked”
When the desired object is denied or delayed — rage emerges. Anger is just unfulfilled desire.
5️⃣ सम्मोहः – “Delusion clouds the mind”
The angry mind loses clarity, acting impulsively and irrationally.
6️⃣ स्मृतिविभ्रमः – “Loss of memory”
You forget your values, your learnings, your purpose. You can’t recall your true self.
7️⃣ बुद्धिनाशः – “Destruction of intellect”
Your power to discriminate right from wrong collapses.
8️⃣ प्रणश्यति – “The soul is lost”
You become a slave to ego, emotion, addiction, and illusion. You fall — not from society, but from your true self.
🧠 Modern Life Applications
📱 Social Media Addiction
- Scrolling → Attachment to others’ lives → Craving → Envy → Mood swings → Self-doubt → Mental breakdown
💰 Chasing Wealth
- Thinking of money → Greed → Anger at delays → Poor decisions → Ethical compromise → Regret
💔 Toxic Relationships
- Obsession → Desire → Possessiveness → Anger → Conflict → Loss of dignity → Emotional ruin
✨ Real-Life Analogy
Imagine a spark in dry grass. It begins with a small glow (thought), turns into a flame (desire), and becomes wildfire (anger) that burns down the forest of wisdom.
This shloka is the fire extinguisher: cut it off at the spark.
📿 Daily Practice Tip (Layman-Friendly)
✅ When a strong desire arises (be it for food, person, praise, etc.), pause and whisper:
“Is this leading me to peace or pain?”
Just asking this question daily will create a gap between desire and destruction.
🪔 Takeaway Affirmation
🎵 Desire may rise, but I stay free,
Not every want belongs to me.
Peace is mine when I let go —
Of fleeting highs and ego’s show. 🎵
